I remember, as a child in grade school, reading a short story titled ‘The Information Highway’. This was long before home computers, the Internet and social media came along. The story talked about how in the future any information we needed would be at our fingertips and how that was going to change the world. Prescient or what? The song ‘Ahead of My Own Game’ brought all that back to me. This song is about the technopocalypse and how technology is shaping the world and changing us as a species. It’s like these days we need more gadgets to operate our gadgets. The narrative voice is a guy who’s so wired that he no longer lives a normal life. I wanted to record this song the first time I heard it, it’s so much fun. We put a lot of amazing sounds and samples in this song that pull it together so well and make it interesting. You find yourself listening multiple times so you don’t miss anything. This song has a lot of great elements to it. It would be cool to have in a spy movie or a Japanimation movie.
On a personal level it feels like we are on information overload. Technology has made it so there isn’t really anything we can’t look up. Information instantly available, whether for good or bad. We’ve become so addicted to social media. It’s entertaining but it’s drawn us a bit further away from each other.
This song is great. It really has an amazing energy to it. Musically we’ve got Brad Zimmer on drums. I can’t pick my favourite drum parts cause I really love all of them here: so much energy. On bass we have Dean Dynna who slaps down some wicked parts, very funky and energetic. Of course we’ve got Tim Holman on guitars, again with amazing energy and flawless playing adding so much to the song. We’ve got a special guest voiceover for the bridge, P.M. Wood, who went a little like Fred Schneider of the B52s for this part. Very awesome and lots of fun. All the vocals were done by myself for this song; it was a lot of fun recording multiple vocal tracks and harmonies. I hope you all enjoy ‘Ahead Of My Own Game’.
